the keshvani press employment

July 2010

To whom it may concern

It gives me great pleasure to provide a reference for Nisar Keshvani.

By way of formal introduction, my name is Fabia Sugandy, and I currently Editor of Southeast Asia Construction. Published since 1994, the trade publication features civil and structural projects in the region and all over the world. The magazine also covers the latest in construction equipment, materials, technology and industry news as well as previews of major construction equipment shows all over the world.

I first met Nisar in 2000, as a Communication Design student at Queensland University of Technology, when he was an Associate Lecturer (Journalism) and Editor of fineArt forum (fAf), the longest running arts magazine on the Internet specialising in new media arts and technology. The news service served a global audience of  1,700 email subscribers and about 7,500 readers monthly.

I find him to be a rare individual, a supervisor with a genuine interest in exposing students to the wider world and encouraging international students to capitalize on their knowledge and to think outside of the boundaries of one country and culture.

As fAf’s Opportunities Editor, I edited copy, web page design/layout, and trained junior staff. I also laid the foundation and resurrected resurrecting fAf’s arts resources section. It became a key resource for our readers, pointing to key international organizations, artists and conferences. The international new media community responded positively and in turn, inspired and suggested means to enhance it.

During my 12-month stint with Nisar, he was an extremely professional, patient, dedicated mentor and educator. The uphill task for me was that I was a Business graduate and Design student, and he patiently introduced me to key journalism concepts and techniques when editing the Opportunities section, and worked tirelessly to value-add and improve the Arts Resources section with me. It was heartening when he shared the positive feedback from partner international organizations and members of the new media community. It was a fruitful, fulfilling and enlightening experience working with fAf and Nisar.

After completing my QUT studies, I remained in contact with Nisar, and he was instrumental in my transition to work in Singapore – offering me real-world job guidance, and advice when I approached him. As my mentor and trainer, I found him to be ever-willing to share his experience and always made time to assist me.

On a personal note, I look upon him as a mentor, positively influencing me to look beyond obvious possibilities and inspiring me to pursue my current job as an Editor. He is calm, positive and a born leader.
